Shalom lechulam! Thanks to all who have joined us in our first two meetings since I took over the group. Now it's time for our third meeting, back once again in Porter Square!

All Hebrew ranges are welcome: beginner to expert. Now's the time to come and flex your linguistic muscles! Is your Hebrew a bit dusty? No problem! We'll be your Dust Buster!

Any questions, please just ask. Also, I've had people asking me about the cost of running/attending the group, etc, so let's say that each person should contribute $1. Hopefully affordable for all! :)

Shalom lechulam!

Thanks to those of you who were able to join us for our first meetup since I took over the organization of this meetup group. Please note that we've got our second meeting scheduled now, for Nov 1st at noon, back in that same Pizzeria Uno in Porter Square. As before, I'm willing to entertain thoughts of other venues and locations, and I expect that Coolidge Corner may well be where the third meetup takes place.

In the meantime, please tell as many of your friends about this group as you can, and let's try to get the group as large as possible in a short time. If people are so inclined, we can start to think about a "buddy system", as well, so that people can have their own Hebrew Buddy, in case they'd like to chat outside of the group meetings. Also, if someone wants to organize their own meeting or implement their own idea, please feel free to share it with me, and if it makes sense, I'll organize an official meetup around it. I've got this account for 6 months, so the more meetings, the better!

Best,

Gary

PS - Please note that there is no official charge for attending these meetings. But it anyone would like to pitch in a couple of dollars to help allay the monthly cost, that would be greatly appreciated. But it is absolutely NOT mandatory. :)

Shalom lechulam!
My name is Gary, and I have decided to step up since Yael will no longer be able to run this Meetup. I'm new to the group, having joined recently but never having made it to an event. So I'd like to start the new season (and new year) off with a low-key gathering at Uno's in Porter Square so that people can provide feedback and input as quickly as possible. I'd love to hear about people's backgrounds, and how it is that they speak Hebrew. I, myself, was a newbie to the language until living in Israel from '96 to 2000. I came back "fluent" (or at least conversational), and began teaching Hebrew to adults through Aish HaTorah upon my return. So that's my "short story". Please bring and share yours. :)
I would also love to hear input on venue, etc. Ideally I think a group like this is served best when hosted by different members in their homes, so if any brave volunteers would like to offer to host, that would be fantastic. I live out in Waltham, so I'm afraid that my place would not be appropriate. But I'm also open to holding events in Coolidge Corner (in places like Rami's or one of the other numerous Harvard St options). Would people be open to CC for venues?
Please feel free to provide feedback and input, and please do come next Sunday to Uno's in Porter Square to say "Hello"! Or "shalom", or "mah ha'inyanim"!
Best,
Gary

Shalom chevray,

Well, I'm at the place I've been working toward for years, which is that I have successfully changed careers and have gotten a job that starts June 1st. That's the good news. The bad news is that I won't be able to organize this group anymore :-( I'm really sad about this since it's been such a wonderful place to meet new people and practice my Hebrew, which is why I volunteered to organize it 2 years ago.

There is now a substantial mailing list, almost 90 people I think. If you think you would like to take over organizing the group, please be in touch with me within the week. I'll send an email to the group next week to let you know what's happening. If no one decides to organize the group, I'll do one more farewell one this summer, most likely on a weekend.

Hope you are all well and enjoying the weather!

B'shalom,
Yael

Shalom chevray,

We had a really fun potluck and movie night last week, thanks to those who came. Our next official meeting will be on May 14th at the Green Tomato, which is a good place to get food if you're coming right from work.

If you'd like to get together with people beforehand, send me a note with where and when and I can post it to the site.

B'shalom,
Yael

Shalom chevray,

Our next meeting will be in the cozy Cambridge home of one of our members, and will be a vegetarian/dairy potluck dinner and Israeli movie night. Please bring a dish to share, and be prepared for good food, conversation, and enjoyable entertainment. The movie will have English subtitles, in case you're concerned about not understanding it all.

We'll start the movie around 6ish, so be sure to arrive early enough to socialize before we settle in to watch our movie. We'll be seeing "The Band's Visit": When an Egyptian police brass band travels to Israel to play at the opening of an Arab arts center, they wind up abandoned and lost in a remote desert town in this charming cross-cultural comedy. Defying expectations, the tiny Israeli community embraces the musicians, and both the Egyptians and the locals learn a few things about one another -- and themselves -- in this witty winner of the Cannes Film Festival Un Certain Regard prize.

Make sure you RSVP since I will only send out the address to those who have let me know they are coming. I look forward to a fun and delicious evening with you!

Shalom Chevrey,

This next meeting will be on Thursday, March 19th from 6-8pm. Since we'll be meeting a bit earlier than usual, we'll meet at a new venue, one that serves food for those of you who are racing over after work: The Green Tomato 2, just outside Davis Square. Click here to see a menu. Apologies to those of you who keep kosher and cannot eat here, though it seems to be the kind of place that you could bring your own food in and they wouldn't notice.

Another good thing about this place is that there is on-street parking on both sides of Elm Street, and it's not metered after 6pm. It's a little bit outside the main hustle and bustle of Davis Square, so the parking is easier than for Starbucks.

Please come to meet new people and practice your Hebrew. These evenings are always enjoyable.
Also see the calendar section of the website for our rescheduled potluck/movie night, which will be on Sunday, April 5th at 5pm. Hope you can join us for either or both!

Shalom chevray,

Let's get together in January and see what we want to do for the next few months with this group, as well as getting a chance to speak Hebrew and meet some new people. We'll be meeting at our usual spot (see above) which should be warm and cozy on a cold January night. If you have any Hebrew/Israeli games, please bring them.

Hope to see you soon.

Shalom chevray,

We'll be meeting for an evening of Hebrew conversation and possibly Scrabble at our old stand by, Starbucks in Davis Square. Come if you've never come before. Come if you've come many times. Come to make new friends or see old ones.

And don't forget to RSVP!
